Small Words, Clear Messages - Foundation

Small Words, Clear Messages helps Foundation learners read and spell a focused set of high-frequency words in connected text. Children map regular and explicitly taught unusual parts, read short natural notes, compare word choices using sounds, grammar and meaning, and write a coherent reply without a word bank.

The selected core words are in, it, at, on, am, an, and, the, to, is, was and said. Familiar names and simple context words support natural communication while keeping the assessed set clear.

Classroom use

Teach one 30–40-minute lesson per session, with shorter literacy or motor-practice bursts and breaks as needed. Use the model display and cards for explicit teaching, the Message Exchange game for purposeful partner practice, the rehearsal pages for transfer, and the fresh-note task for individual assessment. Support can include oral rehearsal and reduced incidental reading or motor demands; extension recombines the same taught words in a fresh natural message.
