Growing Our Useful Word Bank helps Year 1 learners expand beyond already-secure words through explicit sound-spelling mapping and delayed retrieval. A short diagnostic identifies the words that need teaching before learners map a small set, read the words in fresh phrases, spell them after the model is covered and use them in an independent message.
The focus words are with, have, from, there, were, they, some and come. The secured words the, is, and and to provide familiar comparison and sentence-building contexts. Three natural contexts and cumulative retrieval tasks support transfer without presenting the set as a nationally mandated word list.

Support reduces the number of words and adds oral rehearsal; core removes the visible word list; extension combines the same taught words in a fresh natural sentence.
