Look-Alike Words, Different Jobs - Year 1 English Unit

$4.99

Look-Alike Words, Different Jobs helps Year 1 learners distinguish frequent words with similar spellings but different meanings and grammar roles. Children learn a dependable routine: read every letter, say the complete word, identify the word's job and reread the sentence for meaning.

The five 30-40 minute lessons build from explicit modelling and oral comparison to contextual choice, partner explanation, delayed spelling, editing and independent assessment. The fixed word set is were/where, then/than, was/saw, of/off and here/there. Activities are designed to replace first-letter guessing with careful comparison and evidence from the complete sentence.

Learning focus

Learners compare complete spellings, identify how each word works in a sentence, justify choices using context, retrieve taught spellings after a delay and repair specific word confusions in connected text.

Classroom use

Use the resources across five literacy sessions or select targeted pages for small-group intervention, review or assessment. Support uses oral rehearsal and reduced visible choice; core work uses mixed retrieval without a nearby word list; extension applies the same reasoning in a fresh natural sentence.

Assessment and answers

The independent assessment contains six contextual choices with oral reasons, four delayed spellings and a short edit. Word-reading accuracy is kept separate from the learner's grammar and meaning explanation. Matching answer pages and criterion-based marking guidance are included.
