Help Year 1 students match capital and lower-case partners, recognise when the forms have distinct shapes, place them at appropriate relative heights, and transfer those choices into readable names and short captions. Capitals and Lower-Case Partners teaches case selection through explicit modelling, air-writing, matching, memory practice, reader feedback and purposeful word use.

The unit contains separate NSW/ACT, VIC/WA/NT, SA, QLD and TAS sections. Each section uses the authorised state handwriting model while preserving equivalent learning demand. Teachers choose the matching state or territory section and use it consistently throughout the five-lesson sequence.

Learners compare A/a, B/b, D/d, G/g, M/m and R/r, apply the checked forms in names including Adam, Bobby, Gigi, Mia, Rory and Ruby, write fresh names, and repair the misconception that lower-case b is a miniature capital B. The independent assessment asks for six dictated words and the caption Ruby has a red bag. Thirty directly paired red answer or marking pages support feedback against observable criteria rather than a generic neatness score.
