Comfortable Writing Stamina helps Year 2 learners keep unjoined handwriting readable and comfortable from the beginning to the end of a short writing task. The five-lesson progression begins with a personal comfort/readability goal and a targeted formation warm-up. Learners then write a brief information card, rehearse directions with a planned pause, and apply the routine independently in a thank-you message.

Choose one of the separately labelled NSW/ACT, VIC/WA/NT, SA, QLD or TAS handwriting-model routes for your setting. Each route addresses the same learning goal. Students are not expected to work through every state model. Guidance covers shorter writing bursts, larger guides, spelling support and motor-access adjustments, as well as purposeful extension that preserves legibility.

The final assessment looks at independent meaningful writing, beginning/end readability and the learner's self-management. Its four-criterion rubric helps record evidence and a next teaching step. More traced pages or faster writing alone do not demonstrate the target skill.

What's included

  • 93-page Unit Plan PDF with contents page, three-page teacher guide and 89 resource pages.
  • Resource pages: colour comfort-and-pacing displays, worked models and three activity stations; low-ink information-card practice, directions/rehearsal, independent assessment and rubric. Thirty matching answer/marking pages immediately follow the corresponding student pages.
  • Editable 18-slide teaching presentation (PPTX).
  • Editable 26-slide quiz (PPTX): title, 12 question/answer pairs and final slide.

Learning focus

Maintain clear, state-appropriate unjoined forms, letter size and spacing during longer meaningful writing; use a pause or adjustment to sustain comfort and readability. Assess independent transfer rather than speed or tracing quantity.

Classroom use

Teach across five 30–40-minute sessions with short literacy/motor practice bursts and breaks as appropriate. Select one state model, model the routine, provide guided practice and feedback, then use the independent assessment and rubric to identify the next step.
