Words That Help Us Work Together - Year 2 English Unit
Words That Help Us Work Together helps Year 2 learners choose language that supports cooperative roles, turn-taking and constructive disagreement. Children connect the speaker’s role, the listener and the shared purpose before making a request, asking for missing detail, inviting a response or offering a different idea with a reason.
The five 30-40 minute lessons progress from diagnostic examples and explicit modelling to guided dialogue repair, independent role changes, a fresh transfer task, specific feedback, revision and assessment. Builder, materials manager, reporter and observer roles give learners repeated opportunities to explain why a choice helps the listener or the group’s work.

Learning focus
Learners identify speaker, listener, role and purpose; invite another person to contribute; ask for clarification when meaning is incomplete; disagree with an idea or task choice without blaming a person; support the response with a reason; and improve one consequential language choice after listening. Home languages, dialects and accessible response modes remain valid.
Classroom use
Teach the sequence across five English sessions or select targeted pages for modelling, small-group rehearsal, intervention or assessment. Support uses visual role cues, sentence stems, partner rehearsal, signing or AAC; core work requires an independent adapted exchange; extension adds an unexpected listener question and a justified adaptation.
Assessment and answers
The independent assessment asks learners to build a paper table that holds two classroom counters for five seconds. During the task they use an invitation, a clarification and a respectful disagreement with a reason for each. Matching worksheet and rehearsal answers, assessment marking guidance and a four-criterion evidence rubric are included.
