Who are we speaking to? What are we trying to do? How will we share turns? This unit makes those questions concrete through modelled exchanges, rehearsal, a cooperative card-and-board game and fresh spoken assessment.

Students keep the same purpose while switching setting. They practise gaining a turn, checking meaning, offering a useful change, agreeing with part of an idea and responding to what they actually heard. Friendly and more formal language are useful choices, and several responses may fit a situation.

Situation Switch includes full play instructions and worked examples. Five practice worksheets have adjacent answer/example pages. Support options include pictures, pointing, a communication device or an adult recording a response. The assessment records each learner's relevant contribution, linked reply, agreed turn convention and reason for a context choice across two situations.

What's included

  • 41-page A4 Unit Plan PDF: cover/contents, one quick-start page, ten lesson-plan pages and 29 resources.
  • Five complete 50-minute lesson plans with specific modelling, guided/independent practice, differentiation and assessment evidence.
  • Editable teaching PowerPoint — 20 slides.
  • Editable quiz PowerPoint — 19 slides, eight questions with explanations.
  • Three colour display pages.
  • Twelve situation cards, twelve purpose cards and six role cards.
  • Colour game board, rules and two pages of worked examples.
  • Five practice worksheets with matching red answers/examples.

  • 80-page watermarked Preview PDF, clean Table of Contents JPEG and three platform listing-copy TXT files.

Learning focus

Identify people and purpose; follow partner, council and visitor turn rules; choose fitting wording; make a relevant contribution; listen and give a connected reply; check meaning; explain a change between contexts.

Classroom use

A five-lesson teaching week, with each lesson planned for 50 minutes. Use whole-class modelling, pairs and small groups. Cards can be reused for rehearsal and small-group support. Observe each child in two settings during Lesson 5; arrange the planned follow-up conference when a learner needs additional time or support.

Formats and answers

2 PPTX files: editable 20-slide teaching presentation and 19-slide quiz.

2 PDF files: 41-page Unit Plan and 80-page watermarked Preview.

3 listing-copy TXT files and 1 clean Table of Contents JPG.

Student resource designs are fixed-layout PDF pages. Six red answer/example pages follow their matching worksheets. Open tasks accept other relevant responses and explanations. The quiz provides answer explanations; the performance assessment uses observation and the rubric rather than a single model answer.

Teacher benefits

  • A single speaking goal is compared across three clearly different contexts.
  • Worked exchanges show the listener's reply as well as the speaker's words.
  • Full rules and examples support game implementation.
  • Individual assessment separates observable talk from confidence, accent or personality.

Digital product and licence

Digital download; no physical product. For the purchasing teacher's own classroom use. No resale, redistribution or public posting. A PDF viewer is needed for the resources and compatible PowerPoint software for deck editing. Standalone font files are not included.
