Something Easier

There isn’t a close match for the year below yet.

Help Year 5 writers choose punctuation from the facts. Students distinguish ordinary plurals from possessives, show shared and separate ownership, edit names ending in s, and explain how commas clarify a sentence. A class exhibition provides a purposeful thread from short practice to an independent report.

The five complete 55-minute lessons move through modelling, evidence-based sorting, differentiated practice, editing, a checking game and an exhibition-report assessment. Teacher notes address common misconceptions and accept justified, consistent style alternatives where appropriate.

Included classroom resources

  • 60-page Unit Plan PDF: contents page, one teacher quick-start page, ten lesson-plan pages and 48 resource/answer/example pages.
  • Editable 24-slide teaching presentation in PowerPoint format.
  • Editable 22-slide quiz in PowerPoint format: ten questions, ten separate answer slides, a title and closing slide.
  • Two colour teaching displays.
  • A diagnostic ownership check with answers.
  • An ownership evidence mat, 16 cut-out sorting cards and ID-based checking keys.
  • Nine practice worksheets: support, core and extension for each of Plural or Possessive?, Shared or Separate?, and Names and Notices. Each has a matching answer page.
  • Two exhibition editing passages and answer pages.
  • An editor’s decision log and worked examples.
  • Exhibition Editors game: rules and scoring, a 20-space board, 16 challenge cards, checking keys, counters and checking prompts. No dice or purchased game pieces are required.
  • Exhibition facts and planning, an editing assessment, independent 100–150-word report writing, punctuation explanations, answer/example pages and a four-level rubric.
  • A watermarked preview PDF and a clean contents-page JPG.

The PDF contains 28 original resource pages, 19 checking/answer pages and one representative report example. Colour is used for displays and reusable game/sorting materials; writing and assessment sheets use a low-ink black-and-white design. Answers appear in red on matching pages. Open tasks include representative responses and guidance rather than a single mandatory wording.

Learning focus

  • Explain who owns an item before choosing an apostrophe.
  • Distinguish student’s, students’, children’s and ordinary plurals.
  • Contrast Ava and Noah’s model with Ava’s and Noah’s models using explicit owner facts.
  • Use a consistent, explained style for names such as Lucas and James.
  • Set off inserted extra information with paired commas, explain useful introductory boundaries and avoid separating an essential final place phrase.
  • Transfer these choices into an accurate exhibition report and explain the decisions.

Formats

PDF, PPTX and JPG. Presentation and quiz text is editable; printable resource sheets are within the PDF. Includes answers, game checking keys, a representative report, assessment and rubric.
