Commas for Clear Information - Year 6
Guide pupils from identifying comma boundaries to editing and composing clear information. Original fictional exhibition reports and visitor notes give each punctuation decision a purpose: preserve the facts, group the right words and help a reader understand the message.
The sequence moves through lists, time/cause/condition clauses, exact spoken words, an information-desk practical and independent transfer. Pupils explain both comma use and justified omission. They learn how an initial dependent clause differs from an integrated final clause, how two complete clauses differ from shared-subject actions, and how a reporting tag differs from a separate action sentence.
The contents cover orders the materials from teacher guidance and displays through T1–T5 practice, the information-desk resources, quiz, U1/U2 assessment and rubric. Paired answers follow their worksheets. Teachers can select pupil pages and reveal models only after a pupil records a decision.

Learning focus
Separate complete list items; keep multiword items together; recognise a two-item no-comma choice; separate initial dependent clauses; explain integrated final clauses; distinguish independent-clause joins from shared-subject actions; repair comma splices; punctuate statements/questions with reporting tags; separate speech from action sentences; preserve information and justify actual choices.
Classroom use
Five planned lessons of 55 minutes each, with explicit modelling, guided practice, differentiated application, individual explanations and assessment-led next steps. The information-desk activity rotates source reader, editor, reasoner and checker roles. Pupils record their own decisions before revealing checks. T5 provides additional composition practice; U1/U2 stay unseen until the final independent lesson.
Access choices include a visible source read aloud, pointing to sentence chunks, oral rehearsal, extra time and an adult recording the pupil's own response. Record these supports while retaining the requirement to select and explain punctuation.
