Playful Sound Poems - Year 1
Help children listen to whole poems and discuss what they mean before exploring their sound patterns. This unit compares repeated beginnings with rhyming endings, models meaningful word choices and guides children to make two to four connected poem lines.
The original texts include By the Pond, The Rainy Window, At the Park, Tiny Toes and Little Bee Song. Children can echo a spoken or sung model, point, draw or dictate. An original simple teacher melody appears in lesson 2; no audio recording, instrument or pupil music notation is required. Milo's Picnic stays fresh for the final transfer assessment.

Learning focus
Hear and distinguish alliteration and rhyme; discuss whole short texts; imitate a heard pattern; invent meaningful linked lines using both a repeated beginning pattern and an accurate rhyming pair.
Classroom use
Five lessons of 35–40 minutes, with explicit models, guided and independent responses, support/extension and practical observation. Suitable for whole-class teaching, partner rehearsal and small groups. Teachers read every instruction. Speaking, pointing, drawing, usual communication devices and adult scribing are valid response modes. Assess sound learning rather than spelling, handwriting, pitch, loudness or confidence.
