Clear Letters, Clear Lines - Year 2 Australian Handwriting Unit
Clear Letters, Clear Lines helps Year 2 learners produce readable unjoined handwriting by controlling letter direction, relative height and baseline placement. Five separately labelled handwriting variants allow teachers to select the model used in NSW/ACT, VIC/WA/NT, SA, QLD or TAS without mixing forms between systems.
The five 30-40 minute lessons move from explicit tall, body and tail-zone modelling into high-value b/d, p/q and g contrasts, useful words, short captions, reader-focused feedback, repair of a common baseline error and independent transfer. Learners write for a reader and explain an exact feature rather than treating tracing totals, speed or generic neatness as the learning goal.

Learning focus
Learners distinguish ascenders, body letters and descenders; form high-value contrast letters in the selected state style; keep letter bodies on the baseline; use readable word spacing; give specific reader feedback; and transfer the skill into a fresh dictated caption.
Classroom use
Use the complete sequence across five literacy sessions or select labelled variant pages for whole-class modelling, small-group support, targeted handwriting review or assessment. Support uses larger guides and shorter sets; core work reduces the visible model; extension adds a longer purposeful caption while preserving the same orientation, height and baseline target.
Assessment and answers
The independent assessment asks learners to write “A quick dog digs in a pond.” without a visible model. Teachers record any spelling, guide-size or motor-access support. Matching state-specific marking pages and a criterion-referenced rubric support evidence-based next steps. Every meaningful answer or marking page follows its student page.
