Year 1 Letter Formation and Handwriting Unit
Help Year 1 students form lower-case letters from a checked starting point and direction, then transfer those movements into readable unjoined words and a useful label. Letters Start Here teaches movement-family thinking through explicit modelling, air-writing, memory practice, reader feedback and meaningful word use rather than alphabet copying alone.
The unit contains separate NSW/ACT, VIC/WA/NT, SA, QLD and TAS sections. Each section uses the authorised formation font for its model pages while preserving equivalent learning demand. Teachers choose the matching state or territory section and use it consistently throughout the five-lesson sequence.
Learners compare c, a, d, g, o and q, apply the checked forms in cat, dog, dad, go and cap, repair an inefficient bottom-start response, and complete fresh transfer tasks. The independent assessment asks for six dictated letters, four unjoined words and a useful picture label. Thirty directly paired red answer or marking pages support feedback against observable criteria rather than a generic neatness score.
