Clap, Chant and Copy - Foundation
Clap, Chant and Copy helps children hear a complete literary phrase, wait for the model, and reproduce its words and agreed actions. Tap Along, Hello, Echo, March and Rest and Pass the Pattern provide meaningful original texts for line-by-line echo, repeated refrains, a short rest and partner or group practice.
Teachers demonstrate an even tap separately from spoken word rhythm. Children explore what repeats or changes and copy an actual model rather than counting one clap for each written word or completing only a picture sort. Prompts are read aloud and models remain visible in the teaching slides.
The five substantial lessons include preparation, intentions and child criteria, prior learning, exact resource references, explicit teacher models and expected responses, guided and supported independent practice, differentiation and observation notes. Exact A/B listening scripts and model/key guidance make the practice tasks usable without audio files.

Learning focus
Listening to a whole model before responding; copying a literary phrase and agreed action pattern; noticing and preserving a repeated line or brief pause; distinguishing an even beat from spoken rhythm; explaining or showing one heard feature.
Classroom use
A five-lesson teaching week, with lessons of about 40–50 minutes and shorter rehearsals where useful. Whole-class modelling, guided practice, pairs, cooperative games, safe seated/standing stations and a short individual or supported conference. No instruments, running or thrown objects are required. Voice, AAC, partner echo and agreed table/finger/seated actions are valid access routes; record the actual response and support used.
Teacher benefits
- Ready model text and listening scripts reduce the need to invent performance prompts.
- Cooperative game, partner rounds, stations and group refrain provide different ways to practise the same copying goal.
- Seated and communication access options preserve the learning goal while documenting support.
- The conference record and rubric distinguish observed copying from correct picture choices.
