Chant It, Rhyme It, Sing It - Year 1
Start with complete, meaningful short texts and help children notice how their sounds work. Children hear repeated beginnings and rhyming endings, echo a pattern and invent new related lines. The original Ready to Go chant, Splashy Sea poem, A Rhyming Reply and Seed Song support a clear progression from listening to oral composition.
Seed Song includes an original simple melody in the teacher's lesson plan. The teacher sings a model; children may echo, speak or point. The unit needs no commercial lyrics, tune, recording or instrument. It also shows that the same words can be spoken, chanted or sung.

Learning focus
Hear and discuss actual beginning and ending sounds in context. Imitate a model, choose a meaningful rhyming reply and create related lines with both alliteration and rhyme. Explain the actual words that matched.
Classroom use
Five lessons of 35–40 minutes. Suitable for adult-led whole-class teaching, supported partner practice and small-group cooperative play. Read prompts aloud. Accept speaking, pointing, drawing, a communication device or adult scribing of the child's idea. Children do not need independent spelling, music notation or a compulsory solo singing performance.
Assessment:
Pet Parade is introduced fresh in lesson 5. Record hearing/discussion with sound evidence, imitation and invention. Use the three-level rubric and observation sheet to record the child's response mode and any adult model or prompt. Assessment does not penalise spelling, neatness, pitch or confidence.
