Year 1 learners ask useful questions, compare childhood experiences and explain what changed or stayed the same. The unit develops careful source use: a visible clue can support an idea, while one picture or account cannot describe every child's experience.
The ten 60-minute lessons progress from inquiry and toy clues to school, leisure, communication, generations, viewpoints, evidence, a short museum talk and a revised conclusion. The compact route combines lessons 1–2 and 9–10, uses one opening and closing in each combined session, and completes the same essential teaching and assessment by session 8.

Learning focus
Childhood across generations; change and continuity; inquiry questions; relevant source clues and limits; unscaled chronological order; viewpoints and access; time vocabulary; evidence-supported explanations; reflection and transfer to a new fictional case.
Classroom use
Whole-class source modelling, guided comparisons, partner discussion, individual or supported recording, cooperative game practice and portfolio/conference assessment. Read sources aloud. Offer pictures, pointing, gestures, drawing, speaking, dictation or communication-device responses. Assess reasoning, not handwriting or confidence. Use invented accounts rather than require home disclosures; choose gentle seated passing or pointing for the game activity.
