Our Family Stories – Foundation HASS Unit Plan
Our Family Stories supports Foundation children to investigate who cares for people, how family members are connected, and the places people were born and raised. Children ask questions, gather information from fictional accounts and objects, compare perspectives, and explain a source-based conclusion.
The unit offers ten complete 60-minute lessons, each with its own editable presentation. A detailed eight-session route combines selected slides and activities from Lessons 1–2 and 9–10. It retains the essential teaching and assessment and provides the exact slide sequence and evidence to collect.
Maya, Leo, Asha and Harper are fictional cases. Learners may use these throughout, with no requirement to share private photographs, personal birthplaces or difficult family experiences. Teaching uses respectful comparisons and distinguishes a stated fact from a guess. Oral, pointing, communication supports, drawn and scribed responses are equivalent ways to demonstrate learning.

Learning focus
Explain family and care relationships; distinguish born from raised; ask relevant questions; record information from sources; compare accounts and perspectives respectfully; select evidence; communicate an explanation and recognise a source's limits.
Classroom use
Use the complete sequence for ten lessons or the mapped eight-session route. Read accounts and prompts aloud, model the reasoning, then use partner investigations, the cooperative game and individual evidence checks. Assess an existing map and inquiry portfolio through a short conference or an accessible response mode. A new display is not required to complete the compact route.
Answers
Each worksheet is followed immediately by a matched red answer/example page. Open tasks accept other accurate, source-supported responses. The game has a teacher key; quiz questions have editable answer/feedback slides. The map assessment has a conference record and rubric, with guidance for equivalent response modes.
Teacher benefits
Separate lesson files support flexible pacing. Fictional cases provide a complete participation route. Matched examples clarify evidence expectations. The eight-session route retains essential learning and assessment without requiring two full decks to be taught end-to-end in a combined session.
