Chants We Can Change - Year 2
Children work with familiar classroom, pretend parcel and playground chants before applying the same strategy to an unseen Picnic chant. Caller/group labels make roles clear. Repeated responses help learners predict the pattern, while practical changes give them something specific to test and explain.
Children identify repeated word groups, reproduce short caller/group exchanges and deliberately change and test one part. They compare what stayed and changed, hear the gate/wait ending-sound pair, and rehearse their own meaningful chant version. The three assessment skills are recorded separately; a completed worksheet alone does not establish oral reproduction.
What's included
- 38-page Unit Plan PDF: contents page, one teacher quick-start page, ten lesson-plan pages and 26 resource pages.
- Five complete lessons: 45, 45, 50, 50 and 55 minutes, with modelling, guided practice, independent application, support, extension and observation prompts.

- Six matching red answer/example pages immediately after their related sheets. Open creative examples are not the only acceptable responses.
- Editable 22-slide teaching PowerPoint.
- Editable 18-slide quiz PowerPoint: eight questions, each followed by its answer and feedback, plus opening and closing slides.

- A separate high-quality Table of Contents JPEG.
Learning focus
Identify a repeated word group or response; reproduce a short exchange in order; deliberately change an item, action, destination or response; test sound and meaning; tell a listener what stayed and changed. Hear the familiar gate/wait rhyme without treating all chant lines as rhyming or equating beats with syllable counts.
Classroom use
Use as a five-lesson Year 2 English week for whole-class modelling, paired rehearsal, a cooperative pattern game and individual assessment. Read prompts aloud as needed. Children may respond through speech, pointing, action, drawing, a communication device or adult scribing, with support recorded. Small seated actions are included. Familiar books, pencils, a light empty pretend parcel and optional picnic props support teaching. No purchased text, audio, musical instrument or other unit is required.
