Balance and Explain Number Sentences - Year 4
Build an understanding of the equals sign as a relationship between both complete values. Students find missing parts, starting quantities and amounts removed, choose a useful property or inverse, and check their solution in the complete original equation.
The unit develops addition order and grouping, adding zero and equal differences under matching changes to both subtraction numbers. Practical equal-value models support the small-number kit cases; hundreds are represented with drawings or symbolic equations. Claim tasks separate whether a numerical value is correct from whether its explanation is valid. Students retain the original source and explain a justified repair.
What's included
The 62-page Unit Plan PDF contains one cover/contents page, five complete lesson-plan pages and 56 resource pages, including one combined Teacher Quick Start. The resource pages include:
- Nine practice and matched-answer pairs, with 27 complete practice cases.
- Two complete practical kits: 36 identical one-unit counters, eight small-number equation cards, two 18-slot pan mats, a source holder/removal tray, blank equal-value record, six complete claim sources, six method cards, a repair workspace, blank claim-and-reason record and matched feedback.
- Two application and matched-answer pairs.
- Three fresh independent assessment and matched-answer pairs.
- A four-criterion rubric and blank class/conference evidence tools.
- Two reference posters, a prerequisite check/answer pair, reflection/teacher response guide and extension/key pair.
Also supplied: editable 136-slide teaching PPTX; editable 22-slide quiz PPTX with 10 multiple-choice questions and matching explanation slides, plus cover and closing; separate contents JPEG; and complete 220-page watermarked preview.
Learning focus
Relational equals; missing-number roles; addition order and grouping; zero; equal changes in subtraction; part-whole inverse reasoning; full original substitution checks; separate judgement of a value and its reason; justified repair of a claim.
Classroom use
Five 45-minute lesson plans progress from concrete equal-value models to properties, diagnostics and fresh independent evidence. Select bank items for guided work, partner tasks and rotations. The complete banks are not all required within one timed lesson; allow flexible continuation. Collect first independent evidence before hints or feedback, and keep fresh assessment pages and keys hidden until the final lesson.
Prepared cuts, one complete source at a time, and pointing, speaking, drawing, writing or neutral adult recording support access. Record mathematical hints separately. Use the four rubric criteria independently from actual evidence.
Formats and answers
Unit Plan PDF: 62 A4 portrait pages, including all lesson plans, resources, matched answers and contents.
Teaching PowerPoint: 136 editable slides.
Quiz PowerPoint: 22 editable slides; 10 multiple-choice questions with matched explanation slides, plus cover and closing.
Preview PDF: 220 pages showing the complete unit plan, teaching deck and quiz deck; first contents cover clean, remaining pages watermarked.
Table of Contents: one separate JPEG.
PDF pages are fixed layout. Native text and shapes are editable in the teaching and quiz decks. Answer pages are included in the 62-page PDF; they are not additional pages beyond that count.
Teacher benefits
Complete sources keep both sides and all givens visible. Paired feedback supports comparison after a first attempt. The two kits provide models and records for practical explanation. Value-and-reason tasks support error diagnosis. The final assessment uses three fresh sources and four separately judged criteria.
Digital product and licence
Digital teaching resource; no physical product. PowerPoint-compatible software is needed for editable decks. Print practical kit pages on A4 at 100%, prepare the cuts and keep sources complete. Use is subject to the applicable Sukindi licence. Do not redistribute, resell or publicly repost the files.
