Unknown Values (pre-algebra) – Year 5 Maths
Develop secure early algebraic thinking with a structured Year 5 unit on unknown values. Students learn that equality means both sides have the same value, then use inverse operations to isolate unknowns in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division equations.
The sequence progresses from one-step equations and equivalent number sentences to unknowns in varied positions, simplify-first strategies, multi-step equations, word problems, error analysis and substitution checks. Colour games and a classroom display support explicit teaching and collaboration, while eight low-ink worksheet pages provide graduated independent practice. A two-page assessment, matching answers and five-level rubric support reliable end-of-unit evidence.
