Art Begins with Play - Foundation Visual Arts Unit Plan
Children explore marks, shapes, colour, texture and familiar tools before choosing processes for a personal or imagined idea. They plan and make an original artwork, test a purposeful adjustment and explain one visual choice with evidence. Teacher modelling demonstrates possible processes without requiring children to copy a finished picture.
Eight core lessons complete all essential teaching and assessment. Optional lessons 9 and 10 reinforce familiar processes and offer a small studio share after the core learning is complete. Each of the ten planned lessons has its own complete editable presentation. Allow about 60 minutes per lesson and use suitable art paper for practical making.

Learning focus
Explore and compare the effects of tools, pressure, direction, shape arrangements, colour mixtures and safe texture processes. Choose visual processes for an idea, make original work, test a relevant adjustment and explain a purposeful choice.
Classroom use
Follow lessons 1-8 in order: marks; shapes; colour; texture; choosing an idea; making; adjusting; artist conversation. Complete required evidence by lesson 8. Optional lesson 9 explores a new effect with a familiar tool; optional lesson 10 shares already-finished work.
Use large safe tools, stable paper, washable non-toxic media and teacher-checked surfaces. Offer dry media, manageable choices, oral responses, pointing, drawing, communication supports or an adult scribe. Practical exploration remains central; folio recording can be adapted when practical or oral evidence is more useful.

Teacher benefits
Separate lesson files make the full or compact route easy to select. Ready-to-use displays, cards and folio records support the practical sequence. Teacher criteria and assessment pages connect observations to the child's own choices. Flexible response modes preserve the intended learning.
Digital product and licence
Digital download. No physical item or art materials are included. Check the seller's licence terms for permitted classroom use.
Answers and assessment
Quiz discussion/answer slides follow each question. Open art and folio tasks have many valid responses; two teacher-guide pages provide criteria and sample reasoning rather than fixed answer drawings. The activity has a teacher response guide. Assess through exploration folio, resolved artwork, teacher observations and a short artist conference. Use the unit rubric and complete required assessment by lesson 8.
