Learning focus

Early sets compare long-vowel spellings and split-vowel patterns. The sequence then develops further vowel groups, r-controlled patterns, alternative consonant spellings, tch and word-final y and ey. Later sets explore inflections, weak vowels, final syllables, open syllables, less predictable short-vowel spellings, suffix spelling changes, prefixes, suffixes and simple contractions. Set 28 brings the taught code together in cumulative reading and revision.

Using the readers

Each companion includes teacher guidance and practical sound, word, spelling, sentence and meaning work matched to its set. Model a task, try it together and then use student responses to choose useful practice. Reread the books for accurate decoding, phrasing and attention to meaning.
