Wombat Stew Foundation English Unit

Teach literary story features, sequencing, retelling and adaptation through a complete companion unit for Wombat Stew.

Please note: The picture book Wombat Stew is not included and should be read or viewed separately before using the activities.

The 22-slide editable presentation introduces literary texts, characters, setting, problem, solution, beginning, middle, ending, cause and effect, sequence words and adaptation. The Stew Story Sequence game provides eight illustrated event cards and a matching eight-space mat. The Retell Role-Play Pack includes headbands for seven characters, colour puppets and an Australian-bush theatre mat.

Favourite Character Vote and Talk combines vote tokens, a seven-column pictograph mat and a response page. The Change the Stew Story mini-book prompts children to change characters, ingredients, setting or ending, while the Stew Sentence Builder supports oral rehearsal and emergent writing.

Three print-friendly worksheet packs contain 21 student practice pages. Eighteen fixed-response or modelled pages have matching red-answer pages. The original two-page The Bush Picnic assessment uses a fresh literary story to assess text type, characters, sequence, retelling and adaptation, with two model-answer pages and a five-level rubric.

Classroom Use

Use the presentation after a class read-aloud. Model story features and event order, then use the sequence cards for whole-class, pair or small-group practice. Rehearse retelling with headbands and puppets before students move into the mini-book, sentence builder and differentiated worksheet packs. The vote and pictograph activity supports oral language and class discussion. Finish with the editable quiz and The Bush Picnic assessment.

The sequence supports approximately five to eight lessons across one to two teaching weeks, with substantial material for revision, support or extension.
