Unpack a Longer Word - Year 3
Help learners read a longer word, identify a genuine prefix and base, and explain the whole word in its sentence. This Year 3 English unit progresses from teacher modelling to guided decisions, mixed examples, a partner game, fresh transfer and independent evidence of learning. Look-alikes such as uncle and under are used to show why starting letters alone do not prove a prefix.

Learning focus
Read longer words by using familiar bases and meaningful prefixes; explain a complete word in context; distinguish genuine prefixes from similar-looking beginnings.
Classroom use
Five lessons of approximately 45–60 minutes. Model with the display and slides, move through guided/core/transfer pages and game cards, then use the six-case independent check. Offer oral explanation or larger print when needed while retaining the same reading-and-meaning goal.
