Time Units that Fit – Year 3 Mathematics Unit
Time Units that Fit helps Year 3 learners select sensible units for everyday durations, estimate a short activity, check it with safe timing evidence and explain a revision. The teaching sequence builds the basic relationships 60 seconds = 1 minute, 60 minutes = 1 hour and 24 hours = 1 day. It explicitly contrasts a clock time with elapsed duration.
The 25-page Unit Plan PDF contains a colour equivalence display, 12 worked example cards across four pages, three guided-to-transfer practice sheets with immediate matching red answer pages, a three-page partner game with a worked turn and 12 challenge cards, two fresh rehearsal sheets with matching answers, an independent assessment and marking page, a learning evidence rubric and a three-page teacher guide for five lessons. The card key is in the teacher guide.
An editable 18-slide PowerPoint presentation supports teaching. An editable 26-slide PowerPoint quiz provides 12 question-and-answer pairs. The combined Preview PDF contains 69 pages.
Learning focus
Choose and justify suitable units of time; use basic second-minute-hour-day relationships; make, test and revise realistic estimates; distinguish clock time from duration.
Classroom use
Five 45–60-minute lessons. Use a teaching clock or calendar, a safe timer, counters and pencils. Begin with brief diagnostic examples, move through guided and independent practice, use the partner game for spoken reasoning, then assess an unfamiliar but matched case. Support uses labelled models and steps; extension asks learners to repair a contradictory claim.
