Turn familiar school messages into purposeful reading and discussion. Children investigate signs, labels, notices, invitations and instructions, comparing the words, pictures and arrangements that help readers. The lessons include explicit modelling, guided practice, partner sorting, a cooperative matching game, independent worksheets, message design and assessment using fresh examples.

What's included

  • 37-page Unit Plan PDF: the contents cover, one teacher quick-start page, five detailed lesson plans and 30 resource pages.
  • 17-slide editable PowerPoint teaching presentation.
  • 18-slide editable PowerPoint quiz: eight questions, immediate answer/explanation slides, cover and finish.
  • 72-page watermarked Preview PDF showing the complete Unit Plan and both decks.
  • Table of Contents JPEG and the three listing-text files.

Learning focus

Children explore what an everyday message helps a reader do or know. They point to words, pictures or layout clues, compare useful patterns in notices and numbered instructions, choose a message for a reader's need, and create and test a helpful message. Examples include school signs, book-return labels, notices, invitations and short instructions.

Classroom use

Plan five lessons of about 40–45 minutes. The sequence moves from teacher modelling through guided comparisons, partner activities and independent practice to fresh-text assessment. Read the texts naturally; children can speak, point, draw or write, or have an adult record their response. Assess their reasoning rather than spelling, neat cutting or independent clock-reading. All teaching texts and fictional event examples are included. Give the independent assessment before the quiz, as one quiz example overlaps the assessment.

Teacher benefits

Complete included text examples support teacher preparation. The same look-think-point-explain routine carries across teaching, practice and assessment. Oral, pointed, drawn and written responses give children practical ways to show their understanding. The rubric connects observed reasoning to a next teaching step.
