Tell It, Act It, Retell It - Year 1
Tell It, Act It, Retell It - Year 1
Help Year 1 children build a connected retell of a familiar story. In the original illustrated story The Windy Picnic, Nina and Ben rescue a picnic cloth from a hedge and find a way to hold its corners down. Children revisit the story, order its main events, explore character speech, rehearse together and share an individual retell in their own words.
Five planned lessons include teacher models, guided practice, independent evidence, support, extension and useful next steps. Adults read the story and prompts. Children may speak, point to pictures, gesture, draw or dictate; handwriting, decoding, confidence and dramatic performance are not the assessment focus.
What's included
- 35-page A4 Unit Plan PDF: contents page, one-page teacher quick-start, five lesson plans and 28 resource pages.
- 20-slide editable PowerPoint presentation with the complete story, event sequence, vocabulary, character speech, retell models and game/rehearsal prompts.
- 18-slide editable PowerPoint quiz: eight teacher-read questions, each followed by feedback, plus cover and closing slides.
- A clean Table of Contents JPEG.
- A 73-page watermarked Preview PDF showing the complete Unit Plan, presentation and quiz. The Preview repeats the teaching content for inspection; it is not an additional set of lessons.
Learning focus
- Order and connect main events, including the problem, actions and resolution.
- Name the characters and add a relevant detail.
- Use meaningful story vocabulary, character speech or gesture in a retell.
- Rehearse, listen and improve a retell while preserving the main story.
Classroom use
Plan about 35–40 minutes per lesson, with rotating small-group observations in the final lesson as needed. Prepare pencils, glue, a token, puppet sticks and safe adult-assisted cutting. The board uses a 35% copy of the scene-card page; ordinary sequencing uses full-size cards. The cooperative game supports rehearsal without a speed race or forced solo performance.
Teacher benefits
The complete story is included. Teaching progresses from shared meaning to independent evidence. Immediate examples support interpretation of responses, while flexible modes and an observation record make the child's actual support visible.
