Space, Sound and Materials Expo - Year 2

Students ask questions, make predictions, compare safely and keep real records. They identify Earth as a planet, discuss patterns in sky position, investigate vibration and pitch through quiet teacher-controlled equipment, and change the size or shape of materials for a practical purpose.

The science expo brings these investigations together through evidence and explanation. A small-group or teacher conference is sufficient; a public display is optional. Students can explain through speech, drawing, writing, pointing, gesture or a communication device. Assessment focuses on demonstrated science learning rather than handwriting, neatness, speed or response mode.

Teach ten complete 60-minute lessons, or use the included eight-session route that combines lessons 2–3 and 9–10 with specific timings and slide selections. Keep real observation windows between lessons. All essential learning and assessment are complete by compact session 8.

Teacher guidance includes safe shadow observations without direct Sun viewing, gentle teacher-controlled ruler demonstrations, supervised scissors and folded foil edges. Sound work offers quiet viewing and permission-based safe touch. Fictional illustrations and transfer cases are labelled; answer guides never replace students' actual results.

What's included

  • Unit Plan PDF: 47 A4 pages, with teacher preparation, safety guidance, ten complete lesson plans, an eight-session teaching route, resources, answer guides, assessment and rubric.
  • Ten separate editable lesson presentations: 9 slides each, 90 slides in total. Each file follows a complete 60-minute lesson with a model, safe practical steps, evidence discussion and an individual check.
  • Editable unit quiz: 24 slides, including ten questions with separate explanation slides, response guidance and reflection.
  • Classroom displays: Our Expo Key Ideas; How We Explain Our Evidence.
  • Source Cards: Sky, Sound and Materials — eight cards across two colour pages.
  • Evidence Trail — cooperative rules, a six-stop trail mat and eight challenge cards across three colour pages.
  • Ten student worksheets: Expo Investigation Questions; New Sky Sequence; Sky Model Limits; Find the Vibration; Compare Sound Changes; Shape for a Purpose; Before and After Evidence; Curate Evidence Stations; Science Expo Conference; Better Questions.
  • Ten matching answer guides, immediately after their worksheets. Red ANSWERS labels and sample reasoning or criteria distinguish guidance from actual investigation records.
  • Two-page integrated assessment: Three Evidence Stations; Explain and Transfer.
  • Assessment Rubric with four criteria and three achievement levels.
  • Preview PDF: 161 pages, combining the full unit plan, all ten lesson presentations in order and the quiz. The first contents page is clean; later pages are marked PREVIEW.
  • Separate clean Table of Contents JPEG.

Learning focus and classroom use

Students connect a claim to a particular record, distinguish models from observations, explain a sky pattern, identify a vibrating sound source and show a useful same-material change in size or shape. They compare predictions with actual results, consider uncertainty and suggest a further safe question.

Use the displays to revisit key ideas, source cards and the cooperative game to rehearse reasoning, worksheets to build an evidence portfolio, and the assessment plus a brief conference to confirm individual understanding. Teacher preparation and matching lesson files keep each practical step and evidence check together.
