Sound Makers - Year 2 Science Unit Plan
Explore how actions create vibrations and different sounds with this Year 2 Science unit. Children identify a vibrating source, distinguish pitch from loudness and investigate how changing the free overhang of the same ruler affects pitch. They plan a guided safe comparison, record real observations, repeat trials and explain a pattern with evidence.
Adult-managed bell damping and cup-and-string models extend the idea to useful sound choices and vibration at a receiving object. The unit deliberately keeps sound comfortable, offers listening alternatives and accepts spoken, drawn, pointed, picture-selected, gestured or scribed responses.
Teach ten complete 60-minute lessons or follow the included eight-session route. The compact route selects teaching slides and keeps all essential learning and assessment within eight 60-minute sessions. Practical assessment uses evidence already collected rather than requiring a second investigation.
What's included
- Ten separate editable lesson PowerPoints, 11 slides each (110 lesson slides).
- Editable quiz PowerPoint with 24 slides, including ten questions and their matching answers.
- 49-page Unit Plan PDF with teacher overview, all lesson filenames/topics, safety guidance, compact route, ten detailed lesson plans, game guidance and assessment guidance.
- Two classroom displays about sound, vibration, pitch, loudness and damping.
- Eight fictional evidence case cards across two colour pages.
- Cooperative Evidence Trail game: instructions, board and prompt sheet (three pages).
- Ten black-and-white worksheets, each followed immediately by a matching red teacher sample-answer page (20 pages).
- Two-page Sound Investigation assessment and one-page rubric.
- Complete 183-page preview containing the full Unit Plan, all ten lesson presentations and the quiz.
- Clean table-of-contents JPEG.
Learning focus
Identify vibrating sources and explain damping; distinguish pitch and loudness; recognise vibration at a receiving cup; ask questions and make predictions; plan a guided safe one-feature comparison; record and repeat real observations; interpret patterns and unclear results; compare records; evaluate fairness and method limits; explain a useful application and next question.
Classroom use
Teach ten 60-minute lessons or use the eight-session route. Use adult-held equipment and comfortable sound levels. The cooperative game and fictional case cards support evidence discussion. Practical and portfolio assessment accepts equivalent communication choices, with the same science criteria.
Formats, page counts and answers
Ten editable lesson PPTX files with 110 slides; one editable quiz PPTX with 24 slides; Unit Plan PDF with 49 pages; full preview PDF with 183 pages; table-of-contents JPEG. The Unit Plan has 19 contents/teacher/reference pages and 30 resource pages. Ten worksheets have immediately following red sample-answer companions. Quiz answers, assessment guidance and rubric are included. Illustrative data are marked as models and real student results can differ.
Factual teaching benefits
Separate editable lesson files support lesson selection. A compact route retains essential teaching and assessment. The same investigation develops from question and prediction to repeat records, evidence explanations and transfer. Listening alternatives and equivalent response choices support participation without changing the science criteria.
