Signs and Messages Around Us - Foundation
Guide beginning learners from noticing a classroom text to explaining how it helps a reader. Pupils explore signs and labels, connect pictures, symbols and short words to a useful place, and compare a concise sign with instructions that add order and detail. They then plan a classroom sign, ask a viewer what it means and clarify a clue where needed.
Five complete lessons include explicit modelling, guided and independent practice, support, extension and formative evidence. The supplied classroom scene, cards and mats offer a seated alternative to classroom observation. Teacher-read wording and flexible oral, pointing, AAC, drawing or scribed responses support access. Assessment addresses communication and understanding rather than fluent reading or neat handwriting.

Learning focus
Recognise signs and labels as texts; explain meaning with relevant clues; relate a message to a useful place; compare a broad message with ordered instructions; make and check a sign that meets a classroom need.
Classroom use
Five Foundation English lessons, with flexible small-group practice and oral conferencing. Read all necessary wording aloud. Cards can be cut out with adult supervision or used as uncut pointing sheets. Ordinary classroom materials include pencils or drawing tools, blank paper, and optional books, blocks and a tub. No pupil device, internet account or walk is required. These activities do not assess road-safety competence.
Formats and answers
PDF, editable PPTX and JPG. Main teaching content: 36 Unit Plan pages + 18 presentation slides + 22 quiz slides = 76 pages/slides. Preview: 76 pages reproducing the content with watermarks. Worksheets are inside the PDF and are not editable worksheet files. Six worksheet answer pages, the game key and ten quiz answer/feedback slides are included. Open tasks use sample responses and “Answers will vary.” Colour displays/activities and low-ink black-and-white worksheets, assessment and rubric are included; answer markings are red.
Teacher benefits
A shared classroom scene and supplied pieces support immediate teaching. The game includes its actual matching cards and complete checking key. The sign-and-steps comparison uses a familiar routine before the assessment transfers understanding to new examples. Teacher record fields capture both the response and the support used.
