Shape Detectives Around Us - Foundation
Turn a classroom shape hunt into purposeful learning. Students look at one marked part of an everyday object, name its shape and show the boundary or feature that supports their choice. Wheels, clock faces, flags, windows, tiles and door panels connect shape learning to familiar surroundings.
The five 45-minute lessons progress through noticing parts, explaining shape groups, searching the environment, building a familiar place and applying the learning to new assessment examples. Students explore circles, triangles, squares and non-square rectangles in different colours and directions. They learn that a square is a special rectangle; the supplied four-family sorts separate squares from non-square rectangles to make the task groups clear.
Two practical kits support repeated reasoning. Part Detectives uses twelve environmental component cards and four empty family mats. Students name, sort and explain a marked part, then reconsider the groups when the sorting rule changes. Build and Explain provides twelve actual shape cutouts, a classroom model and a blank mat. Students create their own picture using at least three pieces from at least two shape families, name two intended parts and show a feature that explains a match.

Learning focus
Name familiar two-dimensional shapes. Sort by a stated property and explain the group. Recognise and describe a named shape part within a whole object. Create a picture from familiar shapes. Use straight/curved boundaries, sides and corners to explain a choice. Recognise that turning a shape does not change its family.
Classroom use
Five teacher-led 45-minute lessons, with explicit models, guided responses, practical application and checks. Support uses tracing, matching, fewer alternatives and adult-read labels. Core addresses naming, sorting and creating. Extension changes a sorting rule and transfers shape reasoning to turned parts and new scenes.
Students may point, place, draw, speak or dictate. Adult reading, cutting, handling and recording can support access. Record shape/rule hints separately. Assess the mathematical choices rather than independent reading, spelling, drawing skill or fine-motor precision.
Teacher benefits
One connected teaching week with a practical sequence. Familiar part-based examples. Two complete reusable kits. Support, core and extension practice. New assessment examples rather than reused practice banks. Clear access options and separate evidence for five learning areas.
Digital product and licence
Digital teaching files; no physical product. PowerPoint-compatible software is needed to edit the two PPTX teaching decks; the printable resources are supplied as PDFs. Print kits at actual size/100% to retain usable piece and slot fit. Adults may prepare scissors/cutouts. Use in accordance with Sukindi's applicable licence terms.
