Settings Build Expectation — Year 4 English Unit
Explore how an author and illustrator can make the same place feel different by selecting details. Students read two complete original versions of a sports hall story and compare matched illustrations of the hall. They move from naming the location to explaining how exact wording and visible details may guide a reader's expectation. Coastal-path practice prepares them for an independent illustrated busy-library assessment.
This five-lesson sequence includes explicit modelling, guided and core practice, a 12-card partner workshop, single-detail revision, transfer, feedback and a four-criterion evidence rubric. The teacher guide gives lesson steps, equipment, answer guidance and support/core/extension options. Sample answers sit immediately after their matching student worksheets in the Unit Plan.
