Requests and Responses for Real Situations - Year 5
This five-lesson English unit moves from a first diagnostic attempt to explicit modelling, differentiated practice, a reusable context game and an independent community-reading challenge. Students keep an intention clear while adapting requests and replies for a familiar classmate, project partner, school office, librarian and community coordinator. They practise respectful refusals, useful alternatives, clarifying questions and thinking time, then explain choices using the stated relationship and situation.

Learning focus
Preserve purpose, item and timing; choose useful words for different people and channels; respond with acceptance, refusal, alternatives or thinking time; check unclear meaning; explain actual choices with context evidence.
Classroom use
Teach five lessons of about 55 minutes, adapting timing to your class. Begin with the diagnostic, explicitly model the intention/person/situation, choose a practice level, then play the four-turn short game or the full game to space 20. Hide displays, phrase banks and teacher keys during the independent challenge. Use the quiz afterwards for feedback. Record reading assistance, extra time or an adult recording the student's words.
Answers
Eighteen matched answer/example pages appear immediately after their student pages. Two additional teacher-key pages support the game. Open responses use examples or criteria and accept justified alternatives. Quiz answers and brief explanations follow each question on separate slides.
Teacher benefits
Concrete situations, purposeful examples, three practice levels, reusable group resources and observable assessment criteria support classroom teaching and feedback.
