Year 1 Reading Expectations Unit

A complete Year 1 English unit for building confident independent-reading routines, strategies, phrasing and stamina.

Reading Expectations is a classroom-ready Year 1 English unit that helps students develop the routines and strategies needed for purposeful independent reading.

Students learn how to prepare a calm reading space, choose a just-right book, care for classroom books, recognise purposeful reading behaviours, use word-solving strategies, check that a sentence makes sense, reread and self-correct, read in meaningful phrases and build stamina in manageable steps.

The unit supports experiences with both teacher-selected decodable texts that reflect taught sound-letter patterns and authentic classroom texts used for vocabulary, ideas, enjoyment and meaning. Students combine developing phonic knowledge with context and grammar rather than relying on a single cue.
