Read, Blend, Make Sense - Foundation

$4.99

Read, Blend, Make Sense supports Foundation learners to read short cumulative decodable narratives accurately and meaningfully. Across five sequenced lessons, children map and blend taught graphemes, track words from left to right and across lines, reread to confirm meaning, compare print with an oral reading and return to specific graphemes when a reading does not match.

The unit progresses from teacher modelling and worked story strips to guided decisions, independent transfer, a purposeful partner activity, rehearsal passages and an individual unseen-text assessment. Pictures support meaning after reading; they are not used as a substitute for decoding.

Learning focus

  • Blend taught graphemes through the complete printed word
  • Maintain one-to-one tracking and move accurately across line returns
  • Reread connected text for meaning
  • Detect a mismatch between print and an oral reading
  • Identify the grapheme evidence that proves a repair
  • Explain an event from an unseen matched story

Classroom use

Designed for five 30-40 minute lessons, with shorter literacy and motor breaks as needed. Use whole-class modelling, supported small-group practice, partner work and an individual final read. Support, core and extension routes retain the same learning target while adjusting prompts and independence.

Formats and answers

PDF and editable Microsoft PowerPoint PPTX. Includes a 25-page unit plan, 18-slide presentation and 26-slide quiz: 69 pages/slides across the three teaching files. Six answer/marking pages appear directly after their matching student pages.

  • Observable decoding evidence rather than picture guessing or comprehension alone
  • Specific grapheme-based repair prompts and model answers
  • Colour display/activity materials and practical low-ink student pages
