Our Story Circle - Year 1

$4.99

Our Story Circle uses four complete original short stories to help Year 1 children connect a literary event with a familiar experience and explain their response. The sequence includes explicit models, partner talk, drawing or optional brief role-play, a cooperative circle game and fresh-text assessment. Children may speak, point, draw, dictate or write a short response. Teacher read-aloud supports understanding without making independent decoding a prerequisite.

Lesson sequence

1. A response needs a story reason.

2. Ask a question for this story.

3. Different readers can give different valid responses.

4. Show a story moment, then explain it.

5. Respond to a fresh story and recognise another reader’s view.

Resources

Two colour displays; four illustrated original narratives; six response/assessment sheets and six matching red companions; one exit response sheet and its red companion; six event cards and six prompt cards on two colour pages; Pass the Story cooperative board and rules; a four-criterion, three-level rubric; and a teacher circle record. Seven red companions immediately follow the matching sheets. Colour displays, stories and games sit alongside low-ink practice/assessment pages. Open responses are labelled possible examples; different relevant reasons are accepted.

Learning focus

Connect a response and reason to a specific literary event or character. Ask and answer relevant story questions. Distinguish what the text states from a possible idea supported by a clue. Listen to and recognise a different text-linked reader response. Explain the connection in a drawing or optional role-play rather than relying on performance alone.

Classroom use

Whole-class read-aloud, modelled responses, pairs, supported small groups and independent response evidence. The game supports groups of 2–4. Offer safe classroom, play or observed experiences; no private disclosure is required. Each lesson includes timings, modelling, guided/independent practice, practical differentiation and evidence to record.

Assessment

The Tiny Stage is the fresh assessment text. Collect a story moment, personal response/link and reason, a relevant question with answer/follow-up, and recognition of another reader’s view. Record response mode and support. Assess literary understanding, not eye contact, volume, compliance, spelling, reading fluency or acting confidence.
