Help readers move from a short impression to a useful explanation: choose a text, name a relevant detail and explain why it matters. Children compare literary texts, connect with a character's experience and recommend a text for a reader's interest. They hear an alternative view and may keep, change or share their choice with a reason.

The original bank includes four short stories, two poems and a dramatic dialogue. A cooperative four-station reading showcase makes the discussion process visible, with optional reader roles and evidence-feedback cards. The final lesson applies the skills to a fresh story and poem.

Different preferences are welcome. Connections may draw on safe familiar feelings, observed situations or imagined experiences. Children do not need to disclose private memories or choose a prescribed favourite.

Learning focus

Explain literary preferences using real text details; connect with a character's feeling, problem or decision; compare texts; make a reader-suitable recommendation; clarify a partner's reason; explain a retained or revised choice.

Classroom use

Use as a teaching week or spread the sequence across a longer programme. Read-aloud, oral response, pointing and adult-recorded responses preserve access without replacing the reasoning task. Assessment 1 contributes 12 points and Assessment 2 contributes 8 points. The four-dimension rubric gives a separate descriptive profile out of 8, with next-step notes.
