Our Classroom Quantity Challenges - Foundation
Contents at a glance: teacher quick-start; five lesson plans; three displays; two worked models; three differentiated worksheet sets; Prep Station and Decision Check practical kits; teaching presentation; quiz; individual assessment and rubric.
Students prepare a classroom collection by comparing what is needed with what is already available. They choose and perform a useful change, quantify the final collection and check the goal has been met. The sequence reaches 10 and includes zero, already-enough collections, spare/removed-object boundaries and correcting a current mistake. Rearranging the same objects gives a useful check that spacing does not change quantity.
Explicit models lead into partner turns, independent practice and fresh physical and virtual challenges. The teaching PowerPoint has three panels with individually movable counters for offline Edit view. A student operates an approved classroom device or directs an adult's exact counter moves. The teacher guidance explains preparation, resetting the classroom copy and gathering individual action, quantity and checking evidence across the week.
What's included
- 50-page Unit Plan PDF: one clean contents page, one teacher quick-start, five full lesson plans and 43 resource/answer/teacher-record pages.
- Three colour displays and two colour worked models.
- Make Enough, Choose the Action, and Repair and Check worksheet sets: support, core and extension for each, giving nine low-ink student pages and nine immediate matching red-answer pages.
- Prep Station: colour instructions, reusable Need/Have/Spare/Taken away mat, eight supplied challenge cards with keys, and a low-ink two-turn record with key.
- Decision Check: colour instructions, eight current-repair/boundary/zero/no-change cards and keys.
- Fresh physical and virtual assessment records and keys; teacher-only observation cues; blank individual observation record; four criteria across Emerging, Developing, Secure and Deepening rubric levels.
- Editable 24-slide teaching PPTX, including three movable-counter panels.
- Editable 22-slide quiz PPTX: cover, 10 question/answer pairs and closing slide.
- 96-page watermarked Preview PDF of the same Unit Plan and decks.
- Separate clean Table of Contents JPEG and three listing TXT files.
Learning focus
Represent separate goal and available collections; choose add, take away or no change; count the amount moved and the final collection; recognise familiar small groups; check enough; exclude spares and removed objects; explain or repair a mathematical decision. Support uses 0-5, while core practical situations reach 10.
Classroom use
Five 45-minute lessons with modelling, guided work, independent practice, virtual turns, checks and access choices. Supply large school-safe counters, pencils and an offline computer/display with PowerPoint. For each pair, allow up to 20 counters: up to 10 fixed goal markers and 10 working counters. Adults read short directions; students may speak, point, draw, use pictures, arrange objects or direct adult movement. An adult may record without giving the solution.
Individual evidence includes both actual task modes and zero/no-change checks. Allow about four minutes per student, around 100 minutes for 25 students, collected across Lessons 2-5 and ordinary observation blocks. The final 25-minute station is one part of this timetable. Reading speed and handwriting do not determine mathematical attainment.
Formats and answers
Unit Plan: PDF, 50 pages, including the teacher plans, student materials, matching red-answer pages and teacher assessment tools.
Teaching presentation: editable PPTX, 24 slides.
Quiz: editable PPTX, 22 slides, 10 taught questions with immediate black-text answers.
Teacher benefits
Supplied models, cards, mat, records and keys reduce the need to invent supplementary tasks. Distinct Need, Have and outside zones make counting boundaries visible. Level choices and oral/pointing/drawing access support participation. Observation and rubric tools distinguish independent decisions from content prompts.
Digital product and licence
Digital teaching resource for the purchasing teacher's classroom use. No physical counters or device are supplied. Do not resell, redistribute or post the files publicly. Use the supplied Preview to inspect the materials before purchase.
