Use real classroom demonstrations, clear picture comparisons and practical partner tasks to build position and location language. Students learn in/inside, on, under, above, next to/beside, between, in front of and behind. Outside supports the contrast with in.

The teaching sequence makes the reference explicit: on means contact with the top, above leaves a gap, between needs two references, and front/behind uses an agreed chair front. Students make, compare, describe and check positions before applying the ideas to fresh classroom and reading-corner examples.

Five detailed 45-minute lessons provide modelling, guided practice, application, discussion, exit checks, differentiation and focused follow-up. The one-page quick-start brings preparation, implementation, access and assessment together.

Learning focus

Interpret one-step position clues; make and describe accurate object positions; identify a meaningful reference and both references for between; describe an actual own location relative to a familiar person or object; compare a clue with the real or pictured arrangement and correct a mismatch.

Classroom use

Whole-class modelling, guided small groups, practical partners and independent picture/placement tasks. Adult-read prompts keep reading demand appropriate for beginning readers. Support speech, pointing, pictures or a communication device, drawing, placing and adult recording. Independent reading, extended writing, left/right and coordinates are not prerequisites.

Use ordinary classroom furniture and small objects. Print the supplied token-page scale at 100%; cut along the dotted contours. The two empty board pages are rotated left within the portrait PDF and are read in landscape. Keep model/checking and answer pages separate until students respond. Use clear routes, stable furniture, safe reach and accessible seated choices; no climbing, crawling, racing or touching peers.

Teacher benefits

One coherent teaching week; concrete contact/containment/reference contrasts; complete reusable practical kits with empty student boards; accessible ways to respond; immediate matching worksheet answers; both object and actual own-location evidence; a rubric based on mathematical meaning.
