One Sound, Several Spellings — Year 6 English Unit
Students hear and locate /f/, compare its spellings in carefully taught words, and apply the same thinking to connected text and new matched examples. The five lessons progress through diagnosis, explicit modelling, guided and independent sound–spelling maps, a partner game, context transfer and individual assessment. The unit teaches the important limitation that gh does not always represent /f/.
What's included
25-page Unit Plan PDF with a three-page teacher preparation guide; colour model display; 12 substantial correspondence cards; guided, mixed and transfer worksheets with matching red answers; three-page partner game; two context-transfer worksheets with answers; independent assessment and marking page; four-criterion evidence rubric. Also includes an editable 18-slide teaching presentation and an editable 26-slide question-and-answer quiz. A combined Preview PDF and Table of Contents image support inspection.
Learning focus
Read and spell complex words with /f/ represented by f, ph or gh; locate the actual grapheme and explain a choice. Students practise both reading and spelling. Word-building or etymology may support a lesson but do not replace the sound–spelling evidence.
Classroom use
Five 45–60-minute lessons. Use letter tiles, counters and pencils for oral mapping before print. Support uses fewer taught examples and oral rehearsal; core practice uses mixed retrieval without a visible word list; extension applies a taught pattern in a natural new sentence. During assessment, observe individual reading aloud, retain the first spelling attempt and ask for an explanation of a correction.
Formats and answers
Digital download. 25-page Unit Plan PDF; editable 18-slide presentation PPTX; editable 26-slide quiz PPTX. Combined Preview PDF totals 69 pages across the Unit Plan and both slide decks. Six matching worksheet/assessment answer pages are included immediately after the respective student pages; the quiz has 12 explained answer slides.
Teacher benefits
Clear five-lesson sequence, original printable resources, explicit correction of the over-general gh claim, differentiated practice, and an assessment that records reading, spelling and reasoning.
