Notice the Unusual Part - Foundation
Notice the Unusual Part teaches Foundation learners to read and spell the, to, of, is, was and said by mapping the sound-spelling parts across the whole word. Children identify the explicitly taught part that needs special attention, retrieve the spelling after a short delay and use the word in a fresh natural caption.
Across five lessons, learners move from worked models and guided practice to mixed retrieval, a partner challenge-and-repair game and an independent read, spell, diagnose and caption assessment. Teacher guidance includes an entry check, success criteria, equipment, support, core and extension routes, evidence recording and targeted next steps.

Classroom use
Teach the unit across five 30-40-minute lessons or use the pages in shorter literacy and motor-practice bursts.
