New Words for Curious Learners - Foundation
Help Foundation children learn what new words mean and use them in purposeful messages and actions. This five-lesson English unit draws on garden, music and safe toy-building contexts, with short adult-read texts, pictures, objects and demonstrations.
The sequence explicitly models how to notice a word, hear it used, find a useful clue, explain or demonstrate its meaning, use it and revisit it. Children choose from taught topics, compare examples and try vocabulary in fresh contexts. Observe, compare and explain are taught through concrete actions.
The teacher guide includes lesson intentions, success evidence, models, guided and independent practice, support/core/extension options, answers, observation prompts and next teaching steps. The cooperative game and buddy task require meaning and purposeful use rather than racing or guessing from pictures.
Adults read the texts and prompts. Children can respond through speech, pointing with follow-up, gesture, demonstration, AAC, drawing or adult scribing. Assess only words already taught and record support separately from understanding. Reading, spelling, speed and artistic neatness are not scored as vocabulary understanding.
The final conference uses fresh radish, egg-shaker, train-ramp and block-bridge examples. A rubric supports decisions about contextual meaning, explanation, useful evidence and transfer.
