My Qualities, My Identity - Year 1
What makes each person unique, and how can qualities help us belong? This unit uses original fictional cases to make personal qualities and identity concrete for Year 1 learners.
Children distinguish an observable action from appearance, connect actions with qualities, and recognise that a person's identity has many parts. They build explanations using interests, roles and contributions, describe others respectfully, practise useful next steps and transfer their thinking to a fresh situation.
The eight-lesson core contains all essential teaching and assessment. Lessons 9–10 are clearly labelled optional: one compares a familiar quality in another setting, and one notices contributions during a cooperative practical task. Each lesson has its own complete editable PPTX; no combined deck is needed.

Learning focus
- Name a quality and support it with an observable action.
- Recognise qualities, interests, roles and contributions as parts of identity.
- Explain personal or fictional qualities with action-based reasons.
- Describe another person's contribution respectfully.
- Recognise that qualities can develop and that one action does not describe a whole person.
- Apply the reasoning in a new setting.
Classroom use
The ten teacher plans each provide a 50-minute sequence of recall, modelling, guided rehearsal, application, feedback and reflection. Use lessons 1–8 as the essential route. Collect the identity web and explanation evidence in lessons 7–8; optional lessons add reinforcement rather than required assessment. Use quiz questions 1–8 before assessment, then reserve questions 9–10 and their reasoning slides for feedback after the lesson 8 conference.
Read cases and prompts aloud. Offer spoken responses, drawing, pointing, gestures, picture/symbol choices, a communication board/device, oral rehearsal or adult recording. Judge the action-to-quality explanation rather than handwriting, confidence, speech volume or eye contact.
Fictional characters provide a shared and private-safe starting point. Children may choose a comfortable private example, watch first, ask for help or pass. Personal and family disclosure is optional. The game is cooperative and does not rank classmates.
Teacher benefits
Complete independent lesson files support lesson-by-lesson teaching. Shared fictional cases reduce pressure to reveal personal details. Matching sample answers and teacher guidance make feedback concrete. The rubric recognises supported communication at every level and focuses on understanding, evidence, explanation and reflection.
