My Likes, My Choices - Foundation

Help Foundation learners express likes, make a choice clear and acknowledge a different preference. Five flexible English lessons use familiar activity pictures, teacher modelling, partner practice and an individual choice conference.

Teacher-read models and original classroom activity pictures support a sequence from naming and liking to a choice between two, words and gestures, respectful replies and a fresh transfer task. Allow approximately 30–40 minutes per lesson and adjust the number of practice turns for the group.

What's included

  • Six pages of teaching guidance: access and setup, followed by five complete lessons with intentions, success criteria, modelling, guided practice, independent opportunities, differentiation and formative checks.
  • Two colour displays: Ways to Share a Choice; We Can Choose Differently.
  • Six low-ink worksheets with six matching answer or sample-answer pages: Like or Just a Name?; My Choice Today; Which Picture Matches?; Two Friends, Two Choices; A Message That Works; My Picture Choice Board.
  • Eighteen Everyday Choice Cards across three colour sheets.
  • A two-page Choose-and-Share Game with an eight-space board, counters and usable rules; an ordinary die is optional and a one-space turn alternative is supplied.
  • A My Choice / Your Choice Mat, eight Respectful Reply Role Plays across two sheets, and a Build a Clear Message activity.
  • A two-page Choice Conference assessment and a four-criterion Preference Communication Rubric.
  • An editable 18-slide teaching presentation and an editable 22-slide quiz, comprising ten teacher-read questions with separate answer and explanation slides.
  • A Table of Contents JPEG and a watermarked Preview PDF.

Learning focus

  • Communicate a like, dislike or choice using an accessible response method.
  • Distinguish naming an object from expressing a preference.
  • Match a message with a picture or gesture and check an unclear message.
  • Recognise and acknowledge another person’s different choice respectfully.
  • Transfer choice communication to a fresh classroom activity context.

Classroom use

Use for whole-class modelling, small groups, partner practice and an individual two-context conference. Support options include two large picture choices, teacher scribing, repeated models and familiar AAC. Extension can add a third option, a simple reason or a changed preference. Essential teaching and assessment are within the five-lesson sequence.

Teacher benefits

Ready-to-use modelling, picture-supported practice and matching answer guidance. The separate two-context record and four-criterion rubric help teachers document communication and the support used. The game has no winner based on preferences.
