This complete Year 5 English unit gives students a practical language for discussing how written, visual, audio, spatial, gestural and movement modes combine to shape meaning. Explicit lesson slides introduce six modes, audience and purpose, mode relationships, visual hierarchy, infographic anatomy, data context, comic conventions, responsible persuasion, research, source recording and revision.

Hands-on and written practice develops in a deliberate sequence. Students sort examples by mode, play a collaborative mode-choice game, identify modes in familiar texts, explain how modes work together, interpret a fact-checked wombat infographic, complete and analyse a comic sequence, and plan an original animal infographic.

The Wildlife Rescue Multimodal Pitch provides an authentic culminating task. Students combine at least three modes for a defined audience, check evidence, plan a storyboard, revise their choices and reflect on impact. The accompanying rubric supports clear feedback across five achievement levels.

Learning Focus and Classroom Use

Use the unit for whole-class explicit teaching, small-group discussion, partner games, independent practice, guided research, formative assessment and a final multimodal creation task. The full sequence suits approximately 5–8 lessons across one to two weeks, or individual resources can be used separately.
