Measurement Year 1 Unit Plan
Give Year 1 students a practical, carefully sequenced introduction to length and capacity. The unit begins with direct comparison and informal units, then develops fair measuring habits: start from the same endpoint, use equal-sized units, leave no gaps or overlaps, estimate before measuring, and record both the number and unit. Capacity lessons use direct comparison and equal scoops or cups so children can reason about which container holds more.
The 16-slide editable presentation supports explicit teaching. Colourful stations and games create meaningful practice, while five worksheet masters provide supported, core and mixed opportunities. Matching answer pages, a Measurement Check-In assessment, a 10-question editable quiz and a five-level rubric make it straightforward to monitor progress across the week.

Learning focus
- Understand length as how long or short an object is
- Compare objects directly from a common endpoint
- Measure and order length with equal-sized informal units
- Estimate, measure, record and explain results
- Understand capacity as how much a container can hold
- Compare capacity directly and with equal scoops or cups
- Keep units, scoops and fill levels consistent for fair comparisons
Classroom use
Use the presentation for whole-class modelling, then move students through stations, games, small-group instruction and independent practice. Finish with the editable quiz, printable assessment and rubric. The supported length page can be used for scaffolding, while the core and mixed pages suit independent consolidation.
