Making Patterns — Foundation Maths Unit

Making Patterns is a complete five-day Foundation Mathematics unit for helping young learners recognise, copy, continue, repair, create and explain repeating patterns.

The sequence begins with sorting and simple AB repeats before introducing AAB, ABB, ABC, AABB and ABCD cores. Children explore patterns through objects, pictures, movements and sounds. Whole-class slides and colour games support explicit teaching and centres, while printable worksheets provide structured independent practice.

The unit concludes with a two-part Pattern Picnic Check-Up, matching answer pages, a five-level marking rubric and a 10-question editable quiz. All printable student pages are organised in teaching order in the 24-page unit plan PDF.
