Students find the complete part that repeats and keep its order when they continue, create or translate a pattern. Five complete 45-minute lessons build from concrete actions and objects to shapes, symbols and numbers. Models include AB, AAB, ABB, ABC and AABB, with accurate discussion of a single-item unit and the distinction between a smallest AB unit and a longer repeating ABAB chunk.

Two practical activities let students make a pattern, find its repeating part, use a fixed legend and explain the next unit. Students reset the mat between representations. D6 offers optional complexity after the core outcome; optional extension is not a gate for the core assessment.

Learning focus

Recognise an ordered repeating pattern; identify its smallest complete unit; continue from a given stopping point, including a partial unit; create an independent repeating pattern; transfer the same structure to another representation using a consistent map; explain the order and repeating part.

Classroom use

Use across five lessons, in teacher modelling, partner activities and independent practice. Read instructions aloud where needed. Students may point, use seated actions, move prepared pieces, draw, speak or have an adult record a response. Collect independent evidence with the fresh formal sheets and practical probes, and record access support separately from mathematical prompting. The native movable-piece ABC slide is used in normal PowerPoint edit view; printed pieces provide an alternative.

Teacher benefits

Complete lesson timing and modelling; supplied kit rules, pieces, mat, records and checks; three main units plus a next unit for the largest taught tasks; explicit transfer between representations; matched answers; practical and formal evidence for next teaching steps.

Digital product and licence

Digital teaching resource; no physical item supplied. See the Sukindi product licence for permitted use. The watermarked Preview is for viewing the resource.
