Teach purposeful partner talk through short models, guided rehearsal and real exchanges. Children practise telling an idea with a reason, showing that they understood, asking a question that fits, adding a useful detail and offering a respectful alternative. Short directions and checks are practised within the games and discussion tasks.
The final lesson uses four reserved class-choice cards, with both children taking speaker and listener roles. A student evidence sheet, teacher observation record and practical rubric help capture what each learner actually did and identify one useful next teaching step.

Learning focus
- Accurately restate a partner’s idea and reason in their own words.
- Ask a related question and listen to the reply.
- Add a relevant idea or useful detail.
- State an opinion with a reason and hear another view respectfully.
- Give, receive and check clear short directions.
Lesson sequence:
1. Listen and show you understood: restate a partner’s choice and reason.
2. Ask a useful question: connect a question to the idea and listen to the answer.
3. Add an idea that fits: build a practical plan and give/check short game instructions.
4. Offer a different idea kindly: explain a reason and respond respectfully.
5. Fresh partner discussion: apply the skills in role-swapped exchanges, record evidence and choose a next teaching step.
Classroom use
Teach five lessons of about 50 minutes. Each lesson includes a clear objective, retrieval, explicit modelling, guided rehearsal, independent transfer, plenary, support and extension. Read prompts aloud, use pictured choices and allow thinking time. Children can speak, point, use pictures or their usual communication support; an adult may record their own meaning. Writing and drawing are memory aids. The assessment observes interaction rather than spelling, artwork, eye contact, stillness or loudness. Keep the assessment examples out of view until the fresh task is complete.
Teacher benefits
- Ready-to-use models link listening to an observable response.
- Picture choices and adult read-aloud reduce the reading demand.
- Support and extension keep the same interaction goals.
- Reserved assessment cards support fresh transfer.
- Observation and rubric evidence guide the next lesson.
