If the Setting Changed - Year 2 English Unit
If the Setting Changed helps Year 2 learners move beyond naming where a story happens. Children learn to identify a concrete setting detail, explain what it makes possible, difficult or unsafe, and connect that condition to a character's goal or action with a clear reason.
The five 30-40 minute lessons progress from a diagnostic evidence chain to guided text comparison, supported and unsupported claims, a Garden-Boundary Comparison Game, fresh transfer texts and an independent assessment. Learners keep the original work separate from their own prediction by labelling every invented condition as a new idea.
The unit uses broad, verified setting-action anchors from Diary of a Wombat and The Tale of Peter Rabbit. The teacher supplies a lawful copy of Diary of a Wombat. The Tale of Peter Rabbit may be taught from a lawful classroom copy or a lawful public-domain edition. The literary works themselves are not included.

Learning focus
Learners identify a real setting detail; explain the condition it creates; connect the condition to a character's goal or action; compare two setting-action links; distinguish supported evidence from an unsupported preference; and predict the effect of a clearly labelled hypothetical change.
Classroom use
Teach the sequence across five English sessions or select targeted pages for modelling, small-group instruction, intervention or assessment. Support allows oral, drawn or partly completed evidence chains. Core work requires a precise detail and reason. Extension asks learners to test an alternative interpretation or changed condition while keeping the same learning target.
Assessment and answers
The independent assessment uses two original short cases. Learners record one setting detail from each, compare the actions, and add one clearly labelled hypothetical change with a safe predicted action. Six matching answer pages, an integrated game key and a four-criterion evidence rubric support marking and next-step planning.
Formats and answers
PDF and editable PowerPoint (PPTX). Unit plan and resources: 25 pages. Teaching presentation: 18 slides. Quiz: 26 slides. Preview: 69 pages.
Answers
