How Stories and Reports Are Built - Year 2
Teach children to use real text evidence when comparing narratives, recounts and information reports. A short verse provides a useful contrast so children see that a shared topic does not mean a shared purpose or structure.
The supplied paper-themed models are complete original teaching texts. Children follow the events in The Paper Bridge, trace time order in Our Paper Day, connect headings and facts in Paper in Our Classroom, and discuss imaginative wording in A Fold. They practise through guided discussion, cooperative games and focused worksheets before applying the same reasoning to two fresh bag-themed texts.
Typical features are explained as clues, with room for justified alternatives. The lessons connect each organisation or language feature to its effect for a reader. Children do more than name a text type or judge a picture.

Learning focus
Identify purpose from the text's ideas and words. Explain event order in a narrative and recount. Group report facts under helpful headings. Find time words, past actions, general statements and imaginative wording in the supplied examples. Explain how a real clue supports a reader.
Classroom use
Five lessons of about 45–55 minutes; adapt for your class. Read texts aloud and keep the full models visible beside excerpts. Use games for small-group talk. Children can point, speak, draw, label or write, with adult-recorded responses where useful. Lesson plans include support, extension and checks for understanding. Reserve the fresh assessment texts for the final lesson.
Teacher benefits
Complete texts and worked examples support read-aloud teaching. Cooperative games require children to explain choices. Adjacent answer pages simplify marking. A fresh task and three-level observation rubric help identify the next teaching step without grading handwriting or decoding speed.
